How to Clean Frameless Shower Glass: Beating South Florida Hard Water

Why South Florida Glass Spots Up Fast

Municipal water across Miami-Dade and Broward carries dissolved minerals, and municipal softening varies by service area. Every shower leaves a fine mineral film behind; when it dries, it becomes the cloudy scale that dulls frameless glass. Add soap scum and humidity that never quite lifts, and an uncleaned enclosure can look permanently frosted within a year. The good news: none of this damages tempered glass if you stay ahead of it.

The Two-Minute Routine That Works

After the last shower of the day, squeegee the glass once, top to bottom, and leave the door cracked so air circulates. That is the entire secret. A squeegee removes 95 percent of the water that would otherwise evaporate into spots, and it takes less time than brushing your teeth. Wipe hardware with a dry towel to prevent mineral buildup on hinges and handles.

Weekly: Gentle Cleaner, No Scrubbing

Once a week, spray the glass with a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and warm water, let it sit two minutes, then wipe with a microfiber cloth and rinse. Vinegar dissolves light mineral film without touching the glass surface or the hardware finish. Avoid anything abrasive: no scouring powders, no scrub pads, no brushes. Tempered glass scratches are rare but permanent, and scratched glass cannot be polished back to invisible.

Monthly or Quarterly: Deep Clean for Built-Up Scale

For heavier buildup, a dedicated hard-water remover made for glass, available at any home store, will dissolve months of scale in one application. Apply with a sponge, follow the product dwell time, rinse thoroughly, and finish with the vinegar wipe. If scale has been baking on for years, we can re-glaze or replace individual panels, which is far cheaper than a full new enclosure.

What Not to Use

  • Abrasive pads and powders, they micro-scratch glass and hardware.
  • Harsh drain cleaners sprayed near the enclosure, overspray etches glass.
  • Unlabeled "miracle" cleaners without a glass-safe label.
  • Windex on matte black or gold hardware, ammonia dulls some PVD finishes over time; use soap and water on the metal.

Optional: Protective Coatings

Factory or after-market hydrophobic coatings let water bead and roll off, cutting cleaning time significantly. They wear over 12 to 24 months and need reapplication, so treat them as a convenience, not a substitute for the squeegee routine. Some of our Miami customers love them for guest baths that get intermittent use.

When Glass Is Beyond Cleaning

If scaling has etched the surface and no cleaner clears it, replacement of the affected panel restores the look completely. Because frameless enclosures use individual panels, we can usually swap one piece without touching the rest of the bathroom. Call 305-814-7483 in Miami-Dade or 954-591-8317 in Broward and we will tell you honestly whether your glass can be saved.
